From my BSc (Hons) Healthcare and Health Science research report:
The term “trans” will be used throughout this report to encompass all people whose gender does not match their gender as assigned at birth in some way, including people with non-binary and agender identities.
This acknowledges the potential medicalised connotations of the term “transgender” that began with its use by medical writers in the 1960s and 1970s (Pearce, Steinberg and Moon, 2019; Williams, 2014).
Using terms preferred by medical and scientific communities, as opposed to those used by the communities being written about, could be potentially othering to members of those communities and would therefore be unethical.
A glossary of terms with definitions from the Trans Language Primer (TLP) has been attached as an appendix (The Trans Language Primer, 2022).
